Breaking Traditions: Alternatives to the Wedding Cake

Sometimes we wonder, are we the only ones obsessed with all things wedding? Apparently not! Meet our guest poster, Ariana! Ariana shares in our wedding fanaticism, especially when it comes to cake. We’re not talking “what flavor cake are you getting”… this is a full-fledged, in-depth exploration of wedding cake alternatives. If anyone is fit to discuss this topic, it would be her. As a lifestyle writer for Wikia, Ariana expertly writes about food, fashion, and weddings. It’s safe to say, she’s got her pulse on the latest and greatest when it comes to wedding dessert trends. You can find her guest post below (warning – prepare to be hungry)!

Guest Post by Ariana:

Weddings are all about tradition…the white dress, something blue, something borrowed, and most importantly- the wedding cake! This year is all about breaking these century-old traditions. Brides are wearing shorter modern gowns, wedding invitations are sent online instead of by mail, and more couples are ditching the wedding cake tradition for new trendy (and mouthwatering) alternatives.

For the cake lover…
If you are still committed to the idea of having cake at your wedding reception, there are a number of alternatives to consider. Cupcake towers are versatile because you can choose a number of flavors to please all of your guests.

Another cake trend is the cake pop. Cake pops are fun because you can decorate them to match your wedding theme. A new version of the cake pop is the push up cake pop. This gourmet twist on the childhood favorite is making waves in the dessert world. This treat will definitely impress your guests!

Let them eat cake!

This Year’s “It” Dessert
Donuts are the dessert of the year. We’ve seen the cronut (croissant and donut hybrid), the cupcake donut, mochi donuts and more. For weddings, chefs are creating donut towers or donut hole pyramids.

Cronuts.. they’re so hot right now.

Influences from Abroad
If you want to class up your donut tower, consider the Croquembouche, a tower of profiteroles (mini cream puffs) held together with spun sugar. This is a traditional wedding cake of French nobility, so live it up like the royals with this classic creation!

Another dessert trend that has made its way west is the macaron (no, not the coconut macaroon- the french macaron!). Macaron pyramids are not only a delicious addition to a wedding, but they are also colorful and festive!

From the croquembouche to the macaron…you can tell that the French know what they’re doing! Make sure to take note of another French classic- the gateau de crêpes. This cake is a rich creation of buttery crepes stacked and lined with sweet, creamy ganache. How can you go wrong?

A taste of the new world.

The Dessert Bar
If you want a little bit of everything, consider the dessert bar. Mix and match your favorite desserts on a buffet table. Serve freshly baked cookies, hand rolled truffles, a spread of seasonal pies, or even create a candy bar so your guests can fill up bags of candy to snack on during the reception. The options are endless!

I’ll have… everything!

At the end of the day, only one thing really matters…the dessert should be delicious!
