The hip hop violinist

The Hip Hop Violinist. That’s Miri Ben-Ari’s title. I saw her perform at a hip hop concert last night, and she’s amazing. An obviously gifted musician, with a funky style, and commanding stage presence, she plays the violin feverishly to well known hip hop songs, picking up the melody one moment, and rocking freestyle the next. While watching her, I had a funny thought. Does she play weddings?! Choosing the right music for your ceremony is an important part of the wedding. It sets the tone, entertains the guests, and conveys personality. You should also keep in mind that whether you hire musicians, have your sister sing, or just play CDs, the musicians/CD players are just as important as your song choice. Make sure they do a run through with sound checks, and rehearse the timing. A faulty mic could result in all the guests in back not hearing your vows. But it’s also important to remember that it’s your wedding day, it’ll be perfect no matter what. If you have to improvise a little, it’ll make the memories that much more colorful. Imagine The Hip Hop Violinist playing a classic Canon in D for the processional, and then after you’re pronounced man and wife, she breaks out the hip hop, and your whole wedding party dances back down the aisle. How’s that for personality?
