12 Slang Terms You Won’t Believe Are Actually In The Dictionary | #NationalDictionaryDay

October 16th is National Dictionary Day! Did you know that the first dictionary was published in 1828 by Noah Webster? He learned 26 languages in the process and it took him 27 years to complete!  Webster believed that vocabulary is an important learning tool, so celebrate today by learning a new word and using it!   • derp, interjection: 1. Also, derp derp, herp derp [hurp durp(used as an inarticulate response to a foolish or awkward comment, action, person,etc.): I can’t believe he just said that. Derp. 2. a person or thing considered to be foolish or awkward. 3. foolishness; stupidity.
  • emoji, noun, plural emoji, emojis: 1. Digital Technology. a small digital picture or pictorial symbol that represents a thing, feeling, concept,etc., used in text messages and other electronic communications and usually part of a standardized set: She texted me an emoji of “money with wings,” which may mean she’s out shopping.
  • FOMO, noun, Slang: 1. a feeling of anxiety or insecurity over the possibility of missing out on something, as an event or an opportunity: If I say no to a party invitation, I get a bad case of FOMO.
  • food baby, noun, Informal: A protruding stomach caused by eating a large quantity of food and supposedly resembling that of a woman in the early stages of pregnancy:  A very small bump was visible in the tight frock, although it could easily have been mistaken for a food baby. 
  • geek chic, noun, Slang: fashion designed for or worn by computer enthusiasts: Her outfit is so geek chic. 
  • LDR, abbreviation: 1. long distance relationship: My college boyfriend and I were in an LDR. 
  • selfie, noun, Informal: 1. a photograph that one takes of oneself with a digital camera or a front-facing smartphone, tablet, or webcam, especially for posting on social networking or photo-sharing website: Selfies posted by teens on Twitter.
  • twerk, verb (used without object), Slang: 1. to dance to hip-hop or pop music in a very sensual way typically by thrusting or shaking the buttocks and hips while in a squatting or bent-over position: The concert was full of girls twerking. 
  • OMG, abbreviation: Oh my God! (used to express surprise, alarm, etc.): OMG, that’s crazy! 
  • street food, noun: any food or beverage sold by a street vendor, as a stall or cart: We ate the street food after exiting the museum.
  • TLDR, acronym: 1. too long; didn’t read: used in response to an online post, text message, article, etc., that is thought to be too lengthy, and usually taken as a rude comment, or used by the writer before a summary of lengthy text: TL,DR his message yet. 
  • YOLO, interjection: 1. You only live once! (used especially to rationalize impulsive or reckless behavior): I bought those expensive shoes I’ve been eying—YOLO! verb (used without object): 2. to engage in impulsive or reckless behavior with this sort of rationalization: We’ve been YOLOing all night.
