Today is the first day of the New Year. To many, this is the day where we start anew by putting the past behind us and move forward with chosen New Year’s resolutions.
The tradition of making a New Year’s resolution has been around for centuries and is still extremely popular with about 1 in 3 Americans making new promises every January.
If you’re still undecided on a resolution for 2014, check out 10 of the most common New Year’s resolutions below. Go ahead, try one of them out and do your best to make sure it sticks!

1) Lose Weight
As you can imagine, this is perhaps the most common resolution year in, year out. It’s easy to understand as many of us suffer from extra weight gain from the months prior. This is a good time to resolve to lose the extra holiday weight.
2) Volunteer to Help Others
Perhaps this resolution is a leftover spirited, holiday feeling. Our hearts are still warm and filled with ooey-gooey goodness so why not take the opportunity to share the joy? Try to make volunteering a priority in 2014.
3) Quit Smoking
With smoking being banned in many outdoor and indoor locations, perhaps now is a good time to give up the unhealthy habit.
4) Get a Better Job
This resolution can mean different things depending on the individual. To some, it may mean an increase in salary. To another it may mean finding more work life balance or a better suited role. If you feel there’s room for improvement in your professional life, take a closer look at this resolution to decide what it means to you.
5) Save Money
This resolution never gets old. We all understand the importance of saving and are always looking for different ways to do so. If you’re looking for a more structured savings goal, then give this 52-week money challenge a go! If successful, you’ll have developed a fiscally responsible new habit.
6) Drink Less Alcohol
With the back to back holiday parties and get-togethers, many of us are probably in need of a little alcohol detox. Try giving this resolution a shot in 2014. The benefits are less empty calories and increased health.
7) Improve Relationships
Call mom more. Send more birthday cards. Send email updates more often. Whatever the relationship or communication method of choice, many resolve to do a better job at staying in touch.
8) Get More Me time
For those of us stretched too thin, this resolution is ideal! Setting aside some “me time” is extremely important for you and your loved ones. You’ll be more rested, relaxed, and present… your friends and family will appreciate the improved new you!
9) Spend less time on FB
This was a very popular resolution for 2013 and we suspect there are still many out there that resolve to do the same for 2014. Give this resolution a try, unplug once in a while and fill up the extra time with new hobbies, family fun time, or reading.
10) Stop Procrastinating
This is a common resolution as many find the start of a new year as an opportunity to hit the ground running. We all wish there were more time in the day but there are some of us that are more guilty of procrastinating than others… for these select few, let’s resolve to better manage our time and to stop procrastinating in 2014!
