A Taste of the Wild

I’ve loved visiting the zoo since I was a kid. I love animals and when I was little I wanted to be a trainer to one of those animal actors like Bart the Bear (he’s in like every movie that features a bear). When I went to Las Vegas, I would spend hours watching the Siegfried and Roy tigers in their habitat at the Mirage hotel. And my favorite Letterman shows are the ones where he has Jack Hanna on as a guest. So I was at the SF Zoo last weekend and I thought what a perfect wedding venue for me and other animal lovers like myself!

I asked around and it seems like most city zoos have facilities for special events including weddings. Of course the prices and options vary. The San Francisco zoo has its own in-house catering service and a Grand Hall that houses up to 300. But the coolest part is that some zoos will open up various habitats for your guests during parts of the reception. A friend of mine attended a wedding at the Santa Barbara zoo and they were able to feed the giraffes!! How cool is that?!

One of the first things people say when I tell them about my future zoo wedding is, “but it smells!” And I’m here to dispel that rumor. I took particular notice this last trip and until you’re there in front of the habitat, it doesn’t smell bad at all. It’s actually quite romantic with the trees and the windy paths. It’s as close to nature as you can get in a big city and it suits me just fine.
