27 dresses disappoints

I love a good wedding movie.  Father of the Bride made me believe that nothing is more charming than a wedding at home.   It also makes me cry everytime I watch it because it reminds me of my relationship with my dad and the fact that one day I’ll walk down the aisle with him and he’ll give me away.  And who wasn’t touched by the scene in My Best Friend’s Wedding when Julia Roberts gives her “best woman” speech?  That tear was real!  Even The Wedding Planner has its moments.  The most impressive was the opening sequence when the camera follows Jennifer Lopez as she handles every detail involved in this grand wedding she planned.

27 Dresses is about a woman who’s been a bridesmaid 27 times because she’s too nice to say “no”.  Critics seem to love this movie and Katherine Heigl is even being touted as the next Julia Roberts!  I’m sorry, I think Katherine Heigel is a fine actor…but she’s no Julia Roberts when it comes to romantic comedies.   I found the characters unconvincing and even the premise which is somewhat original loses its charm when the comedy is being forced down your throat.  Like the scene where she tries on all 27 of her bridesmaid dresses…who’s going to believe that she had to wear a cowgirl dress, a prairie dress and a mini skirt as bridesmaid’s dresses all in one lifetime?  I understand what they’re trying to do here, but I found it a bit contrived.

So if you’re a fan of wedding movies and were thinking about checking out 27 Dresses, I’d say skip it.  NetFlix My Best Friend’s Wedding instead.
