12 Wedding World Records We Can’t Believe

Wedding planning can be tough when it gets down to those tiny little details that matter so much. Can you imagine planning a wedding that includes a world record attempt?

Here are some of our favorite wedding world records – maybe they’ll inspire you to make your big day larger than life!

World’s Longest Wedding Train

At 1.86 miles (yes, MILES) long, this wedding dress clocked in as having the world’s longest train. The train is modeled here by young Romanian model Emma Dumitrescu.

Most Bridesmaids in a Single Wedding

Jill Stapleton got married in Ohio back in 2010, and she had the support of over 110 bridesmaids! Jill owns a gymnastics center called Jill’s Tumble World and invited all her students to help make her big day special. They even used the company website to help coordinate the bridesmaids’ dresses.

One recent English bride came close by having a ceremony with 80 attendants of her own. Much like Stapleton, Katie Dalby owns a company that has a lot of students – Katie’s Boogie Shoes Dance Academy. She felt wrong about inviting some and excluding others, so she had all of them act as bridesmaids! Katie and her pretty-in-pink band of 80 are pictured below:

Most Ushers at a Single Wedding 

Brides aren’t alone in having tons of attendants. In Mississauga, Ontario, Canada in 2003, Arulanantham Suresh Joachim married Christa Rasanayagam. The groom was accompanied by 47 groomsmen, with ages ranging from 2 to 63.

Largest (and one of the most expensive!) Wedding Reception

In 1995, Indian national Jayalalitha Jayaram (a former movie star and chief minister) hosted a reception banquet for over 150,000 guests at her foster son’s wedding in Madras, India. The final wedding tally is reported to have cost over 750 million rupees (US$23,299,162).

Biggest Wedding Cake

Built for a 2004 bridal showcase held in Uncasville Connecticut, the world’s largest wedding cake clocked in at a hefty 15,032 lbs.

Most Expensive Slice of Wedding Cake

Back in 1998, Sotheby’s auction house in New York sold a box holding a slice of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s 1937 wedding cake. The price tag? $29,900! The purchasers reside in San Francisco, CA, and report they do not intend to eat the cake. Proceeds from the sale were donated to Proceeds from the sale were donated to charities supported by Dodi Fayed and Diana, Princess of Wales.

Fastest Marathon Run in a Wedding Dress 

Just in case you ever contemplated running a marathon in a wedding dress, you have some serious competition. UK resident Eleanor Franks donned a full-length wedding dress and veil (as required by Guinness) and completed the April 2011 Virgin London Marathon in London in 4 hours, 11 minutes, and 01 second.

Oldest Married Couple to Run a Marathon

Speaking of athletes, another record-breaking pair exists – the oldest couple to run a marathon side by side. Shigetsugu Anan (83 years and 11 days old) and his wife Miyoko Anan (78 years and 71 days old), both of Japan, ran the marathon together and finished in 7 hours, 36 minutes, and 22 seconds.

Most Marriages in 24 Hours in a Single Location 

In 2009, the Singapore Botanic Gardens in National Parks Board hosted a marathon marrying session, helping 163 couples get hitched.

Highest Altitude Wedding 

Why not skip the wedding planning and get hitched on your way to the honeymoon? That seems to be what 5 happy couples did in August of this year when they flew Fiji Airways from Auckland, New Zealand to Nadi, Fiji. Once they got to cruising altitude, a World Records official was on hand to help them seal the deal at 41,000 feet.

World’s Oldest Bride (Proving that It’s Never Too Late!)

It’s never too late to find true love, and that has been officially proven by the world’s oldest recorded bride, Australian resident Minnie Munro, who  in 1991 married her 83 year old fiance at the ripe old age of 102.
